A musical shadow-play by Chilly Gonzales and Adam Traynor based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen wins a 2015 ADAPTATION AWARD given each year by Hans Christian Andersen Award Committee on Odense, Denmark.

Says Chilly Gonzales: “For years I’ve entertained the idea of writing some dramatic music around this fairy tale for adults by Hans Christian Andersen. Somehow, I haven’t managed to compose the full Wagnerian blockbuster this deserves to be. But in the meantime, here is a suite for chamber ensemble depicting a man at odds with his own shadow. It contains my first self-conscious waltz, a few glaring “leitmotifs,” and some sentimentality that I just couldn’t resist adding.”

Did you see The Shadow when it was being performed in Hamburg and Cologne ? Listen to “SWITCHCRAFT”on CHAMBERS… do you recognize it ?!

Chilly Gonzales & Kaiser Quartett at Arte Lounge

If you’ve never had the pleasure of seeing Chilly Gonzales & Kaiser Quartett Live, we have a special video treat for you below.

Watch Gonzo and quartet perform “Sweet Burden” and “Advantage Points” from new album CHAMBERS, and “The Grudge” from the Ivory Tower album, at the prestigious Berlin Konzerthaus.

The composition of Chambers was inspired by Chilly Gonzales’ deepening relationship with Hamburg’s Kaiser Quartett. The album re-imagines Romantic-era chamber music as today’s addictive pop, using the strings as a modern-day sampler.

To guide fans into his Chambers, Gonzo introduces each song with short note of intention and a dedication, here is “Sweet Burden”:

Dedicated to Gabriel Faure
“My Solo Piano song (and label) Gentle Threat is one of many contradictory titles in my repertoire. Sweet Burden is the album’s first bona fide tear jerker. A long, ambiguous melody inspired by French composer Gabriel Faure. The viola solo is slowly joined by the cello, while the violins chime in with a single-note pattern. We all have our burdens to bear, and maybe only music can sweeten them.”
