A musical shadow-play by Chilly Gonzales and Adam Traynor based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen wins a 2015 ADAPTATION AWARD given each year by Hans Christian Andersen Award Committee on Odense, Denmark.
Says Chilly Gonzales: “For years I’ve entertained the idea of writing some dramatic music around this fairy tale for adults by Hans Christian Andersen. Somehow, I haven’t managed to compose the full Wagnerian blockbuster this deserves to be. But in the meantime, here is a suite for chamber ensemble depicting a man at odds with his own shadow. It contains my first self-conscious waltz, a few glaring “leitmotifs,” and some sentimentality that I just couldn’t resist adding.”
Did you see The Shadow when it was being performed in Hamburg and Cologne ? Listen to “SWITCHCRAFT”on CHAMBERS… do you recognize it ?!
To guide fans into his Chambers, Gonzo introduces each song with short note of intention and a dedication, here is “Advantage Points”:
“ADVANTAGE POINTS” Dedicated to John McEnroe
The “points” are staccato – clipped, insistent. I attempted musical pointillism with Wimbledon ’80 as my backdrop. Try to imagine the waltzing B-section as the endorphins kicking in after a marathon – the transcendence of physical technique (using a racquet or a piano) into pure bliss. This could just as easily have been dedicated to Bobby Fischer, Glenn Gould or Michael Jackson’s moonwalk. It all depends on your vantage point.
